We were very lucky to capture this song by Slaid during our showcase at SXSW. You know who else really digs him? Stephen King. He talks about Slaid (and Jessie Scott's former XM channel) in the new album liner notes:
“listening to a program called Rogue Calls on XM Cross Country, a
radio station that played country music by men and women who did not,
by and large, wear cowboy hats…by fabulous performers that mainstream
country music radio had never heard of: James McMurtry, Ray Wylie
Hubbard, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Gurf Morlix. I listened to Rogue
Calls without fail, and one day some trucker with a southern accent as
thick as chickendirt called and asked if he could hear that ‘quittin’
drinkin’ song’. That song was of course was “Drinkin’ Days” by
Slaid Cleaves and it went into me like a bolt of dry lightning….I
thought it was the voice of a real American troubadour, and when I got
home I made checking Slaid Cleaves out on the Internet my first
priority.”
It's not every that your work gets noticed by someone like Stephen King. This song is from Slaid's new album "Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away."

I just saw Slaid for the first time at the 1st Annual Los Angeles Acoustic Music Festival (June 6 & 7, 2009)(where he performed Black T-shirt, too) and I couldn't be more impressed. Not only did I see his act, but I saw the entire Woody Guthrie tribute show Ribbon of Highway, of which he is a performer in. Fabulous! I've already bought two songs on iTunes and checked out his touring schedule. I will definitely be checking him out again soon.

That is pretty damn cool. Oh how I miss X Country. I called many a time to that show and Slaid was one I requested many times. If not for X Country I would probably not know of other artist/bands like The Stone Coyotes,Jackie Greene, etc. I cancelled my subscription and now download music or listen to a couple of Americana stations online. I've seen Slaid perform at Gruene Hall. He's a really nice guy and the man can sing. Thanks MF
